Sami: A 19 year old Muslim college student
Mona: Sami’s Mother
Angel Ramadan: An angel
Scene: Sami’s bedroom.
Mona: (shouting from the kitchen) Wake up Sami! Time for suhoor!
Sami: (grumbling) It’s too early momma…(burying his head under the pillow).
Mona: (poking her head through the bedroom door) You need to eat something before Fajr.
Sami: I need to sleep.
Mona: (heading back to the kitchen) Come on Sami. Let’s start the first day of Ramadan in the right way. (A young man in a long white robe stands over Sami’s bed).
Young Man: (quietly) Your mom is right Sami. Let’s get out of bed.
Sami: (throwing pillow on the floor) Who are you?
Young Man: I’m angel Ramadan.
Sami: I must still be dreaming. So you will be disappearing soon.
Angel Ramadan: Suit yourself. (he takes a seat at the computer desk, and looks around the room casually; then disapprovingly at the wall)
Angel Ramadan: There is too much dunya in this room. (indicating a Ferrari poster)
Sami: Please don’t insult my dream car.
Angel Ramadan: I hope we can dream of better things brother Sami than cars. Like world peace, bringing an end to poverty, justice, compassion….
Sami: (interrupting) Yeah, yeah…those things too. (Pause) So what exactly is up with you?
Angel Ramadan: I’m not exactly ‘up’ at this moment. My wings will not be necessary for this task. I notice that I blend in better when I abandon my wings when visiting earth.
Sami: No, no…I mean what are you here for exactly if I’m not dreaming?
Angel Ramadan: I’m here to help with your ramadan this year.
Sami: (laughing) I think I can handle ramadan, bro Rama.
Angel Ramadan: I’m not sure I like that nickname. There is too much slang in this society.
Sami: Welcome to the 21st century, bro Rama. As I said, I can handle fasting. There is not much to it.
Angel Ramadan: (smiling) I think there is much more to it brother Sami.
To be continued…..
