Islamic Quotations: Every breath of life is a precious jewel…

Imam Ghazali (rh) says:

It is incumbent on every person who believes in Allah and the Last Day that he should not be oblivious of auditing himself. Every breath of life is a precious jewel which can buy eternal treasures. Wasting these breaths or using them for detrimental purposes is such a great loss which no intelligent person could justify. When a person wakes up he tells himself that the only commodity he has is his life. When life perishes all his capital perishes. This is a new day that Allah has given as a further opporutnity to make amends. If He had taken his life away he would want to return for just a single day so that he could do good. So one should deem that one has died and has returned to the world for one more day. One should not waste these precious and invaluable jewels of life.

The day has twenty-four hours. One should strive today and not become lazy and lethargic lest one loses the ranks of the ‘Illiyeen’ (the highest rank of those in Paradise) and forever live in regret.

    • Assalaam Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,

I’m not sure where you lost understanding in what Imam Ghazali said, but perhaps if you reread what Imam Ghazali (one of the most imminent scholars in Islam whom none of us can compare to) wrote, you would understand that he was saying not to waste life, which is a gift from Allah. Allah gave us life to worship Him and do good works, so we should be busy doing that and not wasting our time for indeed we are going to meet Allah soon. Surely, every Muslim should understand that. Insha’Allah, we will all be protected from bid’aa and from carelessly laying claim that other Muslims are committing bid’aa without knowing the full matter. An injustice against another Muslim, especially a Muslim such as Imam Ghazali is a very grave sin indeed!

  7. Salaam Alaikum Bram,

I saw no innovation in what Imam Ghazali said, and take note that Imam Ibn Qayyim, Ibn Rajab, Hanbali also said the same thing.

He is saying that we have to be careful about every breath that Allah gives us, and we should not waste anything in our life. We are all returning to Allah, and we don’t know when our end will be. We should not get caught up or waste our life doing trivial things.

Also brother, just because Sufis do a lot of dhikr, and you possibly don’t does not mean that they are bad. Is there something wrong with remembering Allah all the time?

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported that the Messenger of Allah said, “Do a lot of remembrance of Allah until they say, ‘He is mad.'” (Ahmad, Abu Ya’la and Ibn Hibban). Perhaps you’d like to check out this site about dhikr:

    Dhikr

Inshallah, may Allah protect all of us from discouraging our brothers and sisters from making dhikr to remember Allah.

  8. I have never heard comments like this.

Why is it that people like to replace sunna things with bidaa.

With all respect to Sheich Islam Ghazali.

Do Dhikr in the way that ALLAH commanded you and the prophet Muhammad Pbuh.

Not the way that the sufi dreamers do and I’m not talking about all the sufi’s

    Every innovation replaces a sunnah.
Its a beautifull piece of writing.

    Peace

  9. Salaam Irving,

Exactly! This is one of my favorites spiritual quotations. Only in the remembrance of Allah does hearts find peace.

May Allah bless you brother 🙂

  10. Alhamdulillah! This is indeed why the Sufi darvish is given a zekr to say with each inhalation and exhalation, so that each breath is a remembrance of Allah. An excellent post 🙂

    Ya Haqq!
