Ubuntu Muslim Edition: Testers welcome!

Our dear readers can rest easy, as rumors of our death have been greatly exaggerated. Smily In fact, Age of Jahiliyah is still alive and kicking, and now that we’ve got spring break – one lousy week glare – it’s time to annouce the biggest news in Ubuntu-land. That’s right, people, I’m talking about Ubuntu Muslim Edition, the one we’ve all been waiting for.

But not so fast; it’s still in alpha release and needs testers and developers to get it on it’s feet. So head over to the site, register and sign up to become a tester. It’s not hard at all; download the .iso and make sure you at least have an extra 10GBs on your hard drive to do a dual-boot. Otherwise, you can help with the artwork, translations, web design or development. Ideas are welcome, also. For more info, check out the forums.

Oh, and while you’re at it, make sure to vote on the logo and splash screen, (you’ll vote for no. 4, if you know what’s good for you). Smily

So get to it, everyone!

  1. Assalamu’alaykum,

Sounds like a great project. I’ve had an on-and-off relationship with Ubuntu, and will try downloading this at some point insha-Allah for testing.

    All the best, insha-Allah!

  2. Salaam Rashid,

Thanks for the heads up. Inshallah, I’ll be joining the mailing list soon. πŸ˜€ I’m already part of the forums, though I haven’t posted much yet.
Hopefully, once summer break comes I’ll be able to devote more time to the community.

It’s alright to post here; hopefully more people will join the community. Word needs to get out. πŸ™‚

Oh yeah, and I’ve installed the metapackage for UbuntuME about two weeks ago and it went without a hitch! Excellent work on this edition. I haven’t come across any bugs yet; I’m quite impressed! πŸ˜€

    Assalamu alaikum ukthi,

Sorry, had to post a comment here because I couldn’t find any other way of contacting you via email etc :$

We’re aware that its very important to incorporate the view and perspective of sisters into the decision making process at “UbuntuME”* and I’d like to invite you to join the team. Sign up to the mailing list** [ ] here insha’Allah (and the forums also [ ] ) and post.

    * We’re in the process of making a name change. A new name hasn’t been decided yet.

** We’ll be moving away from Google Groups to a proper mailing list soon insha’Allah.

Look forward to a reply/seeing you in the list πŸ™‚

    Alhamdulillah πŸ™‚

Yeah, the LiveCD is kind of old now. We’re going for the metapackage for now. CDs will be created later on as well also, but for now development is in packages πŸ™‚

I’m making a script to automate installation, so should be even easier soon insha’Allah πŸ˜€

I think the main problem we’re facing at the moment is exposure. We need more people to know about it, more people to join the development team, and more people to use it. You’re blog post is one step towards this. Jazakallah khayr πŸ™‚

    Assalamu alaikum wa rahamatullah

  5. Salaam, Rashid. Good to hear from you again. πŸ˜€

Alhamdillah, the project has finally started. I’ve downloaded and tried out the liveCD; it’s looks like it’s off to a good start. Unfortunately, when I tried to install it, it crashed. 😦 But, alas, those are the trials and tribulations of pre-alpha releases. πŸ˜€

But now I see there is a new way to install it, through the repositories, so inshallah, I’ll try again over the weekend. Maybe I can become a tester, then.

Hopefully, once the final version is released, you guys can get a subforum at the Ubuntuforums page and get more attention. πŸ˜€
