Winter Scene by A. R. Ammons

There is now not a single

leaf on the cherry tree:

except when the jay

plummets in, lights, and,

in pure clarity, squalls:

then every branch

quivers and

breaks out in blue leaves.

Perhaps, looking out the second floor window from where he always wrote, Ammons saw a blue jay land on a winter-bare tree, and he imagined the bird as a blue leaf. It need not have obscure imagery to be a poem that speaks to the human experience.
