Wilful Testament by Bruce Dawe

After this life, this life,

however long it be

there’s one thing left to give

before eternity

— one last earthly gift

to offer with my last breath

however it should come

I give you, love, my death

Whether it be by accident

or by some strange design,

whether it be in a hospital bed

or a bed at home, that’s fine,

I offer it to you now

before that moment comes,

but you know how clumsy I am

(all thumbs, my sweet, all thumbs)

so if you should receive it

as in a waking dream

(broken, scratched, abandoned)

things are not what they seem

— it was given in a time of plenty

shining, joyful, new

— consider it in that semblance

when my death is given to you
